Do you ever get confused or just don't understand the technical term of computers? You are not alone. Here at Millennium Technology we want to make your purchase as easy to understand as possible, so here are some of the technical terms explained in plain english.

 

Processors

Intel Centrino / AMD Turion / Intel pentium / Celeron
All of the above are types of processors, they are the brains - they process the information in your computer.

Hard Drive

The hard drive is the unit in your computer that stores software programs and information you save on your computer.

RAM

(random access memory) This is where the processor (brains) stores information temporarily while its thinking. More ram will often increase a computers speed considerably.

Wifi / Wireless

This is the computers connection to the internet. There are two types of wireless...
first there is the broadband modem that plugs into your home transmitting your broadband signal around your home.
Second are the cell phone modems available through Vodafone and Telecom that plug directly into your computer and can be used anywhere, not just at home.

DVD Writer

This allows you to write photos and documents to a DVD disk for permanent storage.

Graphics Card

Graphics cards are only required by some computers that will have very complicated things to display, like an architect or some modern games where there are three dimensional images rotating etc.

Blue tooth

Blue tooth allows electronic devices to communicate with the computer wirelessly. eg. cell phone or Ipod.

Network

A network is simply a means of several computers talking to each. Sometimes this is for transferring of data or sometimes it is so that they can share an internet connection.

Multi Card Reader

This allows several different types of digital camera cards to plug directly into your computer.

ISP

(internet service provider) eg Xtra, Ihug, Slingshot etc. These organizations connect you up to the internet.

Virus

A nasty program that has downloaded itself onto your computer and usually will cause annoying things to happen like popup windows or mal functioning programs. A good anti virus program is needed to remove them and keep them at bay.
